Best outdoor spots for families in Limerick

With the vagaries of Irish weather we have to grab the opportunities to get outdoors whenever we can.  So here's some of the best places in Limerick to get outdoors with kids and enjoy the fine scenery in the county.

CurraghChase

Curraghchase - with seating areas and BBQ areas, kids playground close by, walks or cycle on flat trails or into the forest, feed the swans on the lake - suits all age groups.

Lough Gur

Lough Gur has a picnic area beside the lake, flat areas to run around, fish at the edge of the lake, visit the historical sites.  You can also climb Knockadoon hill and easily spend a day here with plenty to do.

Clare Glens

The Clare Glens is a wooded area along the banks of the Clare River, which separates counties Limerick and Tipperary. The scenery is breathtaking, with wild dense forest combined with the calm rushing of the crystal clear waters.

Ballyhoura Mountain Bike Trail

Ballyhoura Mountain Bike Trail is one of the largest areas of its kind in Western Europe. It has trails suitable from the Novice to the serious thrill seekers.

The Southern Trail

The Southern Trail is the route taken by the Limerick - Tralee railway line and it has been developed for walking and cycling. You can join the trail at 7 different places and cycle for routes of various lengths.

Shannon River

For the older children and adults experience the thrills and spills of wake boarding or water skiing at Castleconnell. Take a trip with Shannon Rib Tours for historical and wildlife tours along the estuary.

Fancy a dip? Head to Glin Pier, a Life Guard will be on Glin Pier during July and August for 3 hours before and after high tide. And for a lazy slow day grab your rod as there are plenty of places to go fishing!

Castletroy Playground and Park 

Castletroy has a playground and skateboard park beside it and also a lovely laid out park to walk around which will keep all age groups happy.

Castle Demesne Park Playground

At the entrance to the Desmesne is a lovely open playground and a very nice spot for picnics.

Stroll or cycle in the 100 acres of Demesne mature parkland and it is walking distance of Newcastle West town centre.
