Meet a Mykidstime Parent - Emma from Dublin

In our Meet a Mykidstime Parent series, Mykidstime.ie talks to Emma, a mum of two boys living in Dublin about parenting.

Tell us about your family

We are the McBrides, my husband and I have been married for almost 5 years and we have two little boys.Jamie is 2 years old and Daniel is 8.5 months old.

Describe a typical day in the McBride house

A typical day at the moment is get up at 6.30am or earlier if Daniel wakes, one of us feeds Daniel while the other jumps in the shower and gets dressed and ready for work.

Jamie usually gets up at that point and we get him and Daniel dressed and ready to go to creche.

Leave the house at 7.40 and drop the boys off. My husband then gets on the bus to work and I drive on to my office and am at my desk for 8am.

Leave work at 4pm and go and collect the boys. Snacks at home and then I'll put on dinner and we'll play on the floor for a little while until my husband gets home. Dinner and then we start the bed time routine, all going well they are both asleep by 7.30/8pm.

Weekends are a lot more fun and we go to playgrounds, visit family, go home to Galway etc

What aspect of parenting do you find most enjoyable?

The loveliness of seeing things through a child's eyes, everything is so much more fun and amazing! I love being their protector, their teacher and most importantly their Mum.

What do you find most difficult as a parent?

Interrupted sleep. The constant worry about them for the rest of their lives ranks pretty high up there too!

What is best piece of parenting advice you have ever received?

Make sure to take pictures of nice things you do with them, you can use them as evidence when they harangue you for being a terrible parent during their teenage years! In all seriousness, the best advice is to enjoy it and I do try to do that as much as I can.

And the worst parenting advice you received?

I was once told never to look at a baby upside down as it hurts their eyes....seriously! What's worse is I believed it, cue me not making any eye contact whatsoever with my  first child while putting his car seat in and out of the car!!

If you were Minister for Children what one change would you make?

That she make every effort to ensure no child is hungry in Ireland

What are your hopes for your children?

I hope they are ultimately happy in whatever path their lives take, I hope they live in a better run country than they do now and I hope they give me loads of lovely grandchildren!
