Parents of transgender children are faced with a difficult decision - Looking up from the changing table, the beautiful boy said to his mother, “I want to be a girl.”  This was not a passing phase. At 3, Mark asked to dress for Halloween as Dora the Explorer; his parents bargained him down to Darth Vader, which at least featured a cape. At 5, he insisted on trick-or-treating as Gabriella Montez, the High School Musical sweetheart. By then, his birthday parties were girl-only, with girl-only themes. Any boy toys received were instantly re-gifted to a cousin. From nymag.com

Government commits €50k to rehabilitate former child soldiers - The Government has pledged €50,000 to support the rehabilitation and reintegration of former child soldiers in Sierra Leone.  The funding has been announced by the Minister of State for Trade and Development, Joe Costello, and comes nearly three months after the Kony 2012 viral video campaign brought the issue of child soldiers to the forefront.  From Thejournal.ie

Florida Teen Starts Library For Homeless Kids - It started out as a one-time bat-mitzvah project. But three years, 5,000 books, and almost 200 volunteering hours later, Lilli Leight is nowhere near putting her literary mission to rest.

While volunteering at a Miami homeless shelter, Leight, 15, noticed that the kids would turn on the television after finishing their homework, because they didn’t have access to books.  That’s when Lilli was inspired to start a library for homeless kids.
